The War Was Taking Long

we had to take trees
to the front lines
trees visible, hidden, escapees
we shaved the heads of
those weak saplings
they wore uniform
but with the first pouring of fire
they all fell to the ground, died, burned
the trees were not good soldiers
and our military calculations were wrong
each tree became its own casket
