    Mark Lipman, recipient of the 2015 Joe Hill Labor Poetry Award; founder of VAGABOND; a writer, poet, multi-media artist and activist, is the author of six books, most recently, Poetry for the Masses; and Global Economic Amnesty.     I step onto land<\/p>\n

    where my ancestors<\/p>\n

    planted our family tree<\/p>\n

    over 1,000 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    I have known no other sand<\/p>\n

    between my toes<\/p>\n

    under my feet<\/p>\n

    this is my only home.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    One day though<\/p>\n

    a stranger arrived<\/p>\n

    sat down at our table<\/p>\n

    drank our wine<\/p>\n

    ate our bread<\/p>\n

    raped our women<\/p>\n

    burnt our village<\/p>\n

    then declared me illegal.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    The color of my skin<\/p>\n

    the language on my tongue<\/p>\n

    the god that I chose to believe in<\/p>\n

    demonized in order to justify their cruelty.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    The freedom that I enjoyed<\/p>\n

    my right to self-determination<\/p>\n

    gone, victim to yet another<\/p>\n

    military occupation.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    My peace,<\/p>\n

    simply a broken olive branch<\/p>\n

    cut from the tree they tore down.<\/p>\n

    My home,<\/p>\n

    rubble, beneath the tracks<\/p>\n

    while human beings die in the streets<\/p>\n

    under the batons and artillery shells<\/p>\n

    of a militarized police state<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Wrapping oneself in a flag<\/p>\n

    worse yet, a religion<\/p>\n

    while making excuses for genocide<\/p>\n

    sanctioning the murder of children.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    News actors continue to blame the victims<\/p>\n

    force feeding us lies, calling us terrorists<\/p>\n

    because we were born onto the land that they coveted.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Who is the real enemy,<\/p>\n

    the one who believes in something different than you,<\/p>\n

    or the one who uses what you believe in to change who you are?<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    There is no escaping the soul staring back in the mirror<\/p>\n

    regardless of the shifting lines on some map<\/p>\n

    human rights have no borders.<\/p>\n
