\nwith the founding fathers and the founding mothers
\nand the dreams Chief Joseph wrought
\nwhen he threw down his arms
\nbefore shock and awe<\/p>\n

I wrote this in America where I find myself
\nbeing born day in and day out<\/p>\n

I thought this poem up in America on the day they showed
\na soldier treat a naked Iraqi man as if he were a dog
\nsimply because she had weapons of mass destruction
\ntrained on his body in a prison near Babylon<\/p>\n

I made this poem in America
\non an assembly line of anger and disgust<\/p>\n

I wrote this while the Secretary of Defense
\nsat before the Congress, the lights were bright
\nand he could not open his eyes<\/p>\n

I wrote for love
\nbut love was lost
\nI wrote for freedom
\nbut it is just a word
\nI wrote for dignity
\nbut it belongs only to the rich and powerful
\nI wrote for God
\nbut he was not home<\/p>\n

God bless the other God
\nthe good God who does not die
\nin a bath of blood
\nperpetually
\non a wide screen<\/p>\n

I am trapped, trapped like the President
\ntrapped in the death of language
\nfeeling lonely there<\/p>\n

I\u2019m the Secretary of Another War
\na Deep War of Words<\/p>\n

when I testify
\nbison stir the prairies
\nthe grassland weeps:
\n\u201cGive my country back to me\u201d<\/p>\n

America cannot hide from the world
\nas the chambers of torture reveal
\njust how anxious we\u2019ve been
\nto seek an empire<\/p>\n

I cry for American words
\nthat slip out of pure street lingo \u00a0gone wild
\nthey were sweet in the farmland, clearheaded
\nwhen Jack Kerouac crossed the Rockies
\nsublimely joyous citizens covered their eyes in clouds
\nthat folded-in on the folklore of hope
\nGive me the strength of President Lincoln and Martin Luther King
\ntwo voices who sang, two eagles who soared<\/p>\n

I cry for American eyes<\/p>\n

I cry-out for Iraqi poetry
\nfor Iraqi pride, for their desire
\nfor their lives, for their deep history<\/p>\n

\u201csimple eyes\u201d see everything<\/p>\n

where has our America gone?<\/p>\n

who is innocent, anyway?<\/p>\n

I want to cover the President with buddha
\nand free the prison guards
\nfrom their angry empty lives
\nand bring them language
\nas they have brought us
\na landscape of fear<\/p>\n
