{"id":469,"date":"2009-10-08T06:28:46","date_gmt":"2009-10-08T06:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/nucleus-import\/?p=469"},"modified":"2009-10-08T06:28:46","modified_gmt":"2009-10-08T06:28:46","slug":"herta-muellers-win-is-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/herta-muellers-win-is-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Herta Mueller&#8217;s win is announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>German author Herta Mueller has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature<\/p>\n<div class=\"leftbox\"><img src='https:\/\/mahmag.org\/nucleus-import\/media\/2\/20091008-herta muller.jpg' width='116' height='87' alt='' \/><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->..<\/p>\n<p>Herta Mueller&#8217;s win is announced<\/p>\n<p>German author Herta Mueller has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature, the academy in Stockholm has announced.<\/p>\n<p>The Romanian-born writer follows last year&#8217;s French winner Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, while British writer Doris Lessing won in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller, born in 1953, is renowned for her depiction of the harsh conditions under Nicolae Ceausescu&#8217;s regime.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish academy praised Mueller for both her poetry and prose.<\/p>\n<p>Literary prizes<\/p>\n<p>It said the writer had an ability to &#8220;depict the landscape of the dispossessed&#8221; and writes &#8220;with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mueller was born to a family from Romania&#8217;s German minority and her mother was deported to a labour camp in the Soviet Union after World War II.<\/p>\n<p>She emigrated to Germany in 1987, after being dismissed from her job in Romania during the 1970s due to her refusal to co-operate with the regime&#8217;s secret police.<\/p>\n<p>Her first collection of German language short stories, published in 1982, were censored in Romania.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller&#8217;s initial works were smuggled out of the country, while in later years she was awarded several literary prizes, including Ireland&#8217;s Impac Award in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>One of her later books, 2001&#8217;s The Appointment, goes into great detail about living under a stagnated dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>Only a few of the author&#8217;s works have been translated into English, including The Passport (1986), The Land of Green Plums (1994) and The Appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller will receive a prize of 10 million Swedish Kronor (\u00a3892,000) along with her Nobel honour, which will be presented at a ceremony in Stockholm later this year.<br \/>\nbbc<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>German author Herta Mueller has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":546,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[43],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/469"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/546"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=469"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/469\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=469"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=469"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mahmag.org\/archive-english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=469"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
