He has published two books of poetry through Ediciones Perro Azul (Blue Dog Editions); <i>Carta sin cuerpo<\/i> (Letter without a Body) (2001) and <i>Arrullo para la noche t\u00f3xica<\/i> (Lullabye for a Toxic Night) (2005).  He has been sponsered by the <i>Centro Studi, Cultura e Societ\u00e1<\/i> from Tur\u00edn, Italy.  He has also been invited to the International Poetry Festivals in San Miguel, El Salvador in 2000, Managua, Nicaragua in 2002, and Granada, Nicaragua in 2005.  He is considered to be one of the bright young gems of poetry in contemporary <i>Tico<\/i> (Costa Rican) poetry.  His poetry often focuses on issues of religious, social or political contention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<br \/>\n<b>Verdict<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>To Paul and Charlotte<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A man who doesn&#8217;t allow the angels<br \/>\nto smell his drinks, hangs<br \/>\nfrom the ends of coffins<br \/>\nfor a fair commission,<br \/>\nand holds the hands of the dead<br \/>\nso that they may receive their final salary<br \/>\nand one final and advantageous slap in the face<br \/>\nbecause you have to drink from something<br \/>\nbecause the last testament of someone else<br \/>\nis the dust into which we transformed beforehand.<\/p>\n<p>A man in the morning pours the foam of his beer<br \/>\non to the pit bull so that later he can joke about the archbishop&#8217;s<br \/>\nbald woman who incubates the golden egg of his faith.  <\/p>\n<p>A man, like an observant scarecrow<br \/>\non the agitated altar of an old car, thirsty<br \/>\nwhich in itself is a miracle of truth.<\/p>\n<p>A man who hears the telephone ring like a requiem<br \/>\nand knows that it is a woman who is calling given<br \/>\nthat she forgot to turn off the lights upon leaving him<br \/>\nshe is the one who knows best the difficulty of living with fixed matters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><b>Taxi Driver<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>To Bernard Hermann<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The traffic lights are from the fog<br \/>\nwhen the fog clears they turn off<br \/>\nso that the revolutionary race<br \/>\nof our lives may begin.<\/p>\n<p>At a certain time some taxi driver doesn&#8217;t go out for passengers anymore<br \/>\nHe goes out for personal matters<br \/>\nfor that gray death which lounges on the corners<br \/>\nfor those places that are acidic on the maps<br \/>\nhe goes out hunting small game between the fountain jets <br \/>\nin that great shooting range that is the night.<\/p>\n<p>A full body mirror<br \/>\nis also a rear view mirror.<br \/>\nAre you talking to me?<br \/>\nthe taxi driver asks you<br \/>\nthe sleepless god looking<br \/>\nback at the world that is reflected.<\/p>\n<p><i><br \/>\nPoems translated from the Spanish by Andr\u00e9s Alfaro<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read more here to see the translations from Spanish to English of the poems that Alfredo Trejos is reading.
