Ghazal of Distance

Sailors, shepherds and pilgrims follow the light of stars.

The lights of our distant city recall the height of stars.

She leans into him as he extinguishes the porch lamp.

White moths against the darkness—a flight of stars.

He listens for the clatter of high heels on cobbled streets.

A vagrant cloud dims the moon, ignites the stars.

Like stowaways, we disembark and spread into the darkness.

The night closes around us like a fist, despite the stars.

I chase the path your cigarette traces through our city.

Breathe the embers of my body, once again, into the light of stars.
